He joined the company in 2019 after three decades at NASA, where he began as a test engineer and then progressed across the agency, eventually serving as Associate Administrator, NASA’s top civil servant position, and as Acting NASA Administrator for 18 months in 2017-2018.

He visited Smead Aerospace on Monday, Dec. 1, addressing students as well as a separate gathering of College of Engineering and Applied Science leadership and faculty.

The college meeting included a discussion of the direction of the aerospace industry, and Lightfoot’s views of the future of space, technology and where Lockheed Martin is driving their business. There was also a very successful dialogue about how Lockheed Martin Space and Ƶ could work together on projects, student recruitment and ways the company could help enable university initiatives in space policy and national security.

The student seminar was hosted by Mark Sirangelo, aerospace entrepreneur-in-residence, for an interactive discussion on his career path and life lessons, providing real insight and knowledge. Following are some of the elements of the seminar:

Why did you go into aerospace?

I grew up in a little town in Alabama called Montevallo and graduated with 62 kids from high school. There were no engineers in Montevallo as role models. The only reason I went into engineering is because when I took all the tests that you take, the guidance counselor said I should be an engineer. I said, “You mean to drive a train?” I thought she was asking me to be a train engineer.

I was going to go into journalism school, but I started looking into it and decided to major in mechanical engineering.

I followed my girlfriend to the University of Alabama in Huntsville and one day went to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center there. It’s a great place and they have the Saturn V. I was taking propulsion systems and was fascinated by the propulsion concept. I walked around the back of the Saturn V and they have five engines hanging off the thing. That’s what did it for me.

Rocket propulsion has been a major part of your career. What drew you to that area?

I just loved engine testing and propulsion testing. I eventually got an opportunity to run the test area at NASA Stennis Space Center in 1999. It was my dream job because my windows rattled every day. We had probably 20 test positions running different size engines at any given time.

I later was at Marshall and ran the Shuttle Propulsion Office. I was responsible for the first 8.5 minutes of flight, going from 0 to 17,500 mph. There is nothing more daunting, awesome, and scary than T-9 minutes at NASA and the propulsion go-no-go to fly the Shuttle.

You were part of the return-to-flight effort after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. What did you learn from that process?

One of the chief tenets of being an engineer is you’ve got to remain curious, and we had lost our curiosity. There was a requirement in the Shuttle Program that you can’t have any foam come off that external tank, but foam had come off since the very first mission. Because it didn’t do any damage, we convinced ourselves it was okay.

They showed us more times than I care to count Flight Readiness Reviews that basically said, “Loss of foam is not a status of flight issue.” With no data. That was a lesson.

I don’t believe in coincidence anymore. If something happens you have to ask why, and sometimes you have to ask five times.

What was it like serving as associate administrator of NASA?

The associate administrator is the top civil servant in the agency. The two positions above it are political nominees. I was the COO and ran the agency day-to-day

It’s pretty fun. I got to run the Program Management Council that reviewed all the programs. At the time we were dealing with the James Webb Space Telescope.

I had to learn a lot about things I’d never worked on before -- science, aeronautics, things like that.

But when I moved to D.C. for the job, they told me if you want a friend, get a dog. That’s the kind of environment in D.C.

What is Lockheed Martin’s relationship with Ƶ?

Lockheed Martin Space and Ƶ have had a long and positive history of working together on missions, student projects, investment and new technology development. We have been a very significant recruiter on the campus in the past with a great deal of success.

We are continuing to grow substantially in many highly interesting areas of space and technology. I just met with a number of the senior leaders of the college and department and was very impressed with the growth and direction that Ƶ is going. I indicated my strong interest in growing our relationship and of expanding our recruitment efforts of Ƶ students.

Robert Lightfoot is the President of Lockheed Martin Space and a longtime leader in the aerospace field. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences.

Tyson took part in a discussion hosted by Entrepreneur-in-Residence Mark Sirangelo on Wednesday, Nov. 3. The conversation included anecdotes from Tyson’s past, projections on the future of space and physics, and featured a Q&A with student attendees.

“I knew I was interested in the universe from age nine and my first visit to my local planetarium,” Tyson said. “It focused my attention, decisions, the books I would read.”

Growing up, he stuck with science even when faced with teachers who didn’t support his interests.

“They said, ‘Why don’t you join the basketball team?’ They don’t even know the bias dripping in that,” Tyson said.

During the webinar, Tyson challenged attendees to learn as much as they could, and to take harder classes, even if it meant earning a lower grade, as a way to have additional knowledge valuable to employers.

“Learn as deeply as you can how the universe works,” he said. “What matters is what have you done with yourself. What is your knowledge base relative to other people?”

He suggested students review the decadal surveys published by working groups in the National Academies as a way to stay on top of where science and engineering research are likely to be focused in the future.

Tyson is particularly excited about potential new scientific discoveries from the soon-to-launch James Webb Space Telescope, and offered kudos to the engineers who designed and built it.

“I’m a scientist, so we figure out different stuff out from you (as engineers). But you guys have the fun part,” Tyson said. “If you go back 50 years and they were saying how will we ever get big telescopes in space? Then people figured out that you could fold telescopes. In fact this one is hexagonal and the hexagons unfurl.”

In response to a student question about how to balance life and obligations, Tyson acknowledged there are not enough hours in the day to do all he wants.

“Things fall through the cracks and I’m always having to triage. Some things I wanted to study I don’t,” he said.

He discussed concerns about the politicization of science and misinformation in media, and how tribalistic urges inherent in humans often push us into opposing corners even when we agree on many things.

“It’s hard. I’d like to believe that it is not intractable,” Tyson said. “When I grew up there was fighting in Northern Ireland. Catholics are fighting the Protestants? What? Do they have different skin color? No. If Catholics can fight Protestants, then any two people in the world can fight each other for any reason at all.”

Tyson’s appearance was part of Mark Sirangelo’s ongoing Future Insights webinar series for aerospace students. Upcoming talks include Robert Geckle, CEO of Airbus US Space and Defense on Nov. 17, and Mark Esper, former Secretary of Defense, on Dec. 15.

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Tue, 09 Nov 2021 17:32:20 +0000 Anonymous 4737 at /aerospace Future Insights Seminar: 5G and the Frontier of Spectrum Sharing - How is it being implemented and what is its future? - Oct. 20 /aerospace/2021/10/13/future-insights-seminar-5g-and-frontier-spectrum-sharing-how-it-being-implemented-and Future Insights Seminar: 5G and the Frontier of Spectrum Sharing - How is it being implemented and what is its future? - Oct. 20 Anonymous (not verified) Wed, 10/13/2021 - 00:00

Categories:

 Seminar

Tags:

Keith Gremban News Mark Sirangelo News

Keith Gremban
Research Professor, Ƶ
Mark Sirangelo
Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Ƶ
Wednesday, Oct. 20 | 4:30 P.M. | Zoom Webinar

Join Mark Sirangelo as he welcomes Dr. Keith Gremban, one of the country’s leading experts in 5G and spectrum sharing, for a unique discussion and Q&A on the leading developments in 5G. If you are already a member, you can receive an extension of your membership for a year

Current aerospace students should have received an email on June 21 with the subject line "Free year of AIAA membership from Smead Aerospace" that has details on how to take advantage of this opportunity. If you did not, contact us for more information.

We spoke with Mark about his donation and the benefits offered by AIAA :

Why should students join AIAA?

I believe that, beyond the national level aerospace and engineering education that is available at Ƶ, it is really important for a student to begin to build a wide and strong foundation in the industry. AIAA is an organization that is primarily focused on developing the individual more than the organization.

The experiences you can receive through being part of AIAA will not only make you better qualified for your future job but will also help you build connections that can last throughout your career.

There are many special parts of the student sector of AIAA including an active mentorship program, an expansive career center and active engagement programs and events where you can meet peers through the world.

There are also competitions that you can join or individually or as a team to work on simulated real-world problems. These competitions allow you to gain valuable actual experience while receiving constructive feedback and advice from experts all of which can bolster your knowledge and resume.

You’re putting up your own money up to encourage students to join. Why?

The aerospace industry has provided me with some of the most amazing, memorable and life changing memories and moments. It is still unbelievable to me, but I and my teams have been involved in hundreds of aerospace and space programs including missions to seven planets, the moon and the sun. I would have never imagined this to be possible when I was a student.

This has been a really challenging and tough two years for all of us, but particularly for our students. I wanted to find a way to pay what I have had the chance to experience forward while saying thanks to all those who participated in my lectures over the past three years.

Opening the door for everyone to AIAA and the future it creates is a small way for me to do my part to help bring us back to a place where we are looking forward positively again.

Faculty often speak highly of AIAA membership. How has being a member helped you?

Aerospace and space are sectors that is fundamentally built on being part of a team. Almost all successful programs are built on substantial collaboration, people’s past experience and preexisting science or technology. My time with AIAA has made me a better technologist and leader.

Building new and lasting personal relationships which have originated at the many AIAA meetings and sessions that I have attended, has allowed me to create strong industry level networks. It has also facilitated my being able to hire really talented people while helping me understand that I was not alone in facing the challenges that I was facing.

AIAA has also opened up access to invaluable research data and allowed me to have a voice in shaping the rules of engagement that we all operate under in aerospace. Sometime, and often most importantly, it just creates a place to have fun and realize how great it is to be part of such an amazing industry.

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Mon, 21 Jun 2021 20:20:32 +0000 Anonymous 4465 at /aerospace Seminar: Shaping Space Policy - U.S. & International Perspectives - April 28 /aerospace/2021/04/20/seminar-shaping-space-policy-us-international-perspectives-april-28 Seminar: Shaping Space Policy - U.S. & How might that affect me in 5 or 10 years?

Is what I’m learning going to be relevant anymore?

As hard as it may be to see now, real sustainable positives can come from confronting the types of national and global issues that we are facing today. Often, after our darkest days, we have seen some of the most productive, expansive and dynamic times this country has ever enjoyed. That is true now as well.

Many positives are happening. These developments can create a constructive environment for you, for your career and for your future. We will try to present some of these encouraging trends, which might provide you optimistic thoughts for tomorrow despite what we all may be feeling at the moment.

What types of new directions and new opportunities might arise in our society from this time?

What have we learned from this that will actually improve our possibilities in the future?

Are there new areas or sectors that might be accelerated or created through this pandemic?

How might our generation at CU right now, actually make a bigger difference in the future?

What other types of professions or sectors can be pursued with the skills we are learning?

This discussion will give you a chance to discuss what is on your mind. You will also hear from people on the front lines now, helping manage the current crisis, as well as companies who will be hiring in the coming years and others whom you could work with to help build a better future.

We hope that this seminar will provide you a new hope that a positive tomorrow will be there; it will be exciting and will give you all the opportunities to make even more of a difference than you might have thought before.

Off

Traditional

0

On

White
Thu, 03 Dec 2020 21:50:42 +0000 Anonymous 4241 at /aerospace
