Registration Steps for New First-Year Students

Welcome to the College of Engineering & Applied Science!

As a first-year student, the five steps below will help you prepare for your first semester. All first-year engineering students starting in fall, spring, and summer terms should follow these steps (though there may be some slight differences for students that start in different terms).

Step 1: Complete Required Registration Steps

These steps are required. You must complete them before the deadlines to ensure a smooth registration process:ÌýÌý

  • Complete the Math Readiness Test by 11:59 p.m. MT on May 15, 2026. Not having a math placement score can affect your ability to enroll in classes during your New Student Orientation. If you miss this deadline, you should still take the test as soon as possible.
    • All incoming first-year Engineering students must complete the Math Readiness Test. This score is needed for registration; you must complete this test even if you have earned college credit for Calculus 1-3 (through transfer, dual enrollment, or credit).
  • Complete the Online Experience.

Step 2: Attend Engineering Summer Series

Review these resources before your New Student Orientation! The Engineering Summer Series will give you the opportunity to explore your interests, meet other students, ask questions about classes, and get lots of hands-on help before your New Student Orientation. Available sessions include:

  • Enrollment Essentials: Learn everything you need to know about the enrollment process. Through live, student-led demonstrations and personal enrollment challenges, you’ll get hands-on experience with the enrollment system and leave feeling prepared to enroll in classes.
  • Major Advising: Meet academic advisors and learn more about your major. Advisors will review the recommended courses for your first semester and other important major-related policies and information.
  • Making the Most of Your College Experience: In an interactive session, we’ll suggest ways to get the most out of your college experience, next steps to explore, and help you develop questions to ask your advisor or other support professionals throughout your first year.

Sign up for sessions here (begin in April)

Step 3: Prepare for Registration

We offer multiple ways to help students prepare for first semester registration before you connect with an Academic Advisor during your New Student Orientation. Before your orientation date, make sure you’ve done the following:ÌýÌý

Step 4: Register for Classes During New Student Orientation

During your New Student Orientation, Academic Advisors will talk you through the following steps to get enrolled in classes:

  • Understand your degree requirements.
  • Pick out classes, add them to your shopping cart, and understand how to make adjustments if necessary.
  • Enroll in classes when registration opens and troubleshoot any issues.
  • Confirm your schedule and learn next steps should you need to make changes later.

Professional and Peer Academic Advisors will be available to help with registration during orientation. Make sure to raise your hand or speak to someone one-on-one if you’re having trouble or have questions!
